Nancy Yunhwa Rao on Elliott Carter's String Quartet No. 1
In a new article, “Allegro scorrevole in Carter’s First String Quartet: Crawford and the Ultramodern Inheritance,” Dr. Nancy Yunhwa Rao considers the influence of American Ultramodern composers, especially Ruth Crawford, on Elliott Carter’s First String Quartet. The article, which draws on Rao’s extensive study of Carter’s sketches in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., appears in the Fall 2014 issue of Music Theory Spectrum (volume 36, no. 2).
